Storms Ahead!

I know now, Lord, why you utter no answer. You are yourself the answer. Before your face questions die away. What other answer would suffice? – C. S. Lewis

Storms! Life is full of them. It’s not a question of if but only a matter of when the gale forces of life blow into the face of our faith. If only God had equipped us with spiritual Doppler radar to predict the time, intensity and duration of those dreaded tumultuous seasons of life. Often we are left questioning, asking why? Or, when will this storm subside? At times even our prayers seemingly vanish into gusts of fear and uncertainty. Befuddled by God’s apparent silence to his petition for answers, C.S. Lewis concluded that the only answer is the Lord himself. Can you hear the reassurance of Jesus as he meets the disciples in the midst of their peril on the stormy Sea of Galilee? Jesus reveals his presence in the storm, “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” Jesus then does the unexpected. Rather than immediately calming the storm and removing the disciples from peril, he responds to Peter’s request by inviting him to step out of the boat and onto the wind driven waves that threatened Peter’s demise. In a moment in which he must have been gripped with dreadful confusion, and teetering faith, Peter steps out of the boat and into the ferocity of the storm to meet Jesus. Yes, he sank! But his actions remind us that we can encounter Jesus in the storm and trust him in whatever happens next. God is faithful even when we are faithless! Only when Peter acted on his belief did he discover that Jesus alone was his answer. Only then did the storm subside. Both Peter and C.S. Lewis testify that we don’t have to be spiritual meteorologist to know that Jesus alone is our answer in the midst of life’s storms.
